What is GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst
GPT Image 2.5 was released on September 8, 2026, in two variants: Sunburst and Flare. OpenAI calls Sunburst its most capable model for image generation and editing and recommends it for workflows where editing precision matters most. The model takes text and images as input and returns an image. For new integrations, OpenAI recommends GPT Image 2.5 over GPT Image 2.
It works through the Images API: /v1/images/generations creates an image and /v1/images/edits changes an existing one; it can't be called through /v1/chat/completions. Quality can be low, medium, high or the new xhigh and max levels, with auto by default. According to OpenAI's docs, an image edge can be up to 3840 pixels, and anything larger than 2560×1440 is labelled experimental; transparent backgrounds are available in PNG and WebP.
